Free RMM Health Check & Audit for MSPs — Find Out What Your Platform Is Missing

An RMM health check is a structured audit of your Remote Monitoring and Management environment that identifies configuration gaps, alert noise sources, patch policy weaknesses, automation underutilization, and PSA integration problems. TechPIO audits ConnectWise Automate, Datto RMM, NinjaOne, and SyncroMSP environments and delivers a prioritized improvement report within 5 business days — at no cost.

No commitment. No contract. Just a 30-minute call.

Datto RMM COnsulting

Most MSP owners know something is off with their RMM environment. The alert volume is higher than it should be. Patches are failing or going undeployed without anyone noticing. New client onboarding takes three days when it should take three hours. Senior engineers are handling tasks that a properly configured automation script should be handling automatically.

The problem is rarely the platform. ConnectWise Automate, Datto RMM, NinjaOne, and SyncroMSP are all capable of handling everything you need. The problem is that most RMM environments were configured during deployment, left largely untouched, and have accumulated technical debt every month since.

After auditing 199+ MSP environments over 15 years, TechPIO consistently finds the same pattern: MSPs using between 20% and 35% of their RMM platform’s actual capability — not because they chose not to use it, but because nobody had the time or the benchmark to know what was missing.

A TechPIO RMM health check closes that gap. We review your entire environment, document every configuration gap, and deliver a prioritized report telling you exactly what to fix, in what order, and what the operational impact will be.

MSPs that have completed a TechPIO RMM health check reduce alert volume by an average of 50% and recover 12–15 hours of technician time per week within 90 days of implementing the findings.

Is Your RMM Environment Actually Performing?

Before booking an assessment, most MSP owners want to know whether their environment needs one. Here are the signals TechPIO sees most consistently in environments that are underperforming:

Your NOC team processes hundreds of alerts every day but cannot tell you which ones actually required human action last week. Your weekly alert volume is above 500 — but your client count has not changed significantly in the last six months. Patches are scheduled and running, but your compliance rate across managed endpoints sits below 80%. When a new client signs, onboarding their endpoints takes your team two to three days and involves manual steps that cannot be delegated.

If any of these situations describe your current operation, your RMM environment has configuration gaps that a health check will surface.

More importantly: you do not know what you do not know. The most common finding in TechPIO audits is not a problem the MSP was aware of — it is a coverage gap or misconfiguration that had been quietly affecting operations for months without anyone identifying the root cause. Backup jobs failing silently. Endpoints enrolled to the wrong policy group. Alert thresholds set at default values generating noise that buried real incidents.

An RMM health check answers the question every MSP owner should be asking: Is my RMM environment actually working the way I think it is?

RMM Health Check

What a TechPIO RMM Health Check Covers

Every RMM health check TechPIO performs evaluates seven core areas of your environment. Each area is reviewed against established best practices, benchmarked against the patterns observed across 199+ MSP environments, and scored on both current performance and improvement opportunity.

Monitoring Configuration Review

Monitoring is the foundation of everything your RMM does. If the wrong devices are being monitored, or the right devices are being monitored with the wrong conditions, every alert downstream is suspect.

TechPIO reviews the full monitoring coverage of your environment: whether every device type — workstations, Windows servers, domain controllers, network devices, and printers — has the correct role-appropriate monitors assigned. We verify that no endpoints are operating without active coverage, that service monitors are scoped to the services that actually matter for each device type, and that alert conditions are correctly differentiated between informational, warning, and critical severity levels.

We also review alert routing: whether the right alerts are being sent to the right queues, whether escalation logic is configured, and whether any alert types are routing to individual engineers rather than shared queues — a pattern that creates single points of failure in NOC operations.

Patch Management Policy Audit

Unpatched endpoints are the leading cause of preventable security incidents in MSP-managed environments. According to CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, the majority of successful attacks exploit vulnerabilities for which patches already exist.

TechPIO audits your complete patch management configuration: whether patch approval policies are defined by update classification (critical security, optional, drivers, and major feature updates each require separate approval logic), whether staged rollout groups are configured so that a faulty patch does not hit all endpoints simultaneously, and whether third-party application patching is active for the business-critical applications that Windows Update does not cover — Chrome, Adobe products, Java, Zoom, and similar software that appear in the majority of breach reports.

We review maintenance window configuration against client business hours, verify that patch failure alerting is active and creating tickets, and assess whether patch compliance data is being reported to clients in a format that demonstrates MSP value.

PSA Integration Quality

The integration between your RMM platform and your PSA is where many of the most expensive operational inefficiencies in MSP environments originate. A misconfigured integration creates ticket noise, billing inaccuracies, double-handling between systems, and data that cannot be trusted for SLA reporting or client invoicing.

TechPIO reviews the full RMM-to-PSA integration: whether alert-to-ticket creation is filtered so that only actionable alerts generate tickets, whether priority mapping between RMM alert severity and PSA ticket priority is correctly configured, whether auto-resolve logic is active so that self-cleared alerts also close their corresponding PSA tickets, and whether asset data syncs bidirectionally between systems.

We also review time entry configuration — whether remote session time from the RMM is logging automatically against PSA tickets — and verify that the integration is not creating duplicate tickets, misrouted tickets, or tickets without sufficient context for the assigned technician.

Alert Threshold Analysis

Alert noise is the most expensive invisible cost in MSP operations. When technicians receive more alerts than they can meaningfully process, one of two things happens: they start ignoring alert categories wholesale, or they spend hours triaging notifications that required no action. Both outcomes reduce the operational value of monitoring to near zero.

TechPIO reviews every configured threshold in your environment and compares it against operationally validated benchmarks. CPU monitors should fire at 95% sustained for five or more consecutive minutes — not at a single spike. Memory thresholds must account for device role: a terminal server with 50 active sessions and a workstation with one user require entirely different baselines. Disk space warnings at 70% on a 2TB server will generate alerts months before any real risk exists.

We identify every threshold set at default values, every monitor with no recheck delay, and every alert type generating volume that does not correspond to genuine incidents. The analysis quantifies what percentage of your weekly alert volume is noise versus actionable signal.

Automation and Scripting Coverage

This is consistently the area where the largest improvement opportunity exists in every RMM environment TechPIO audits. Most platforms are deployed with basic monitoring active and automation left almost entirely untouched. The scripting capability that could eliminate hours of weekly technician work sits unused because nobody had time to build it.

TechPIO reviews what percentage of common remediation tasks are currently handled by automated scripts versus manual technician intervention. We assess whether self-healing scripts are deployed for the highest-frequency issues — Windows Update service failures, disk space threshold breaches, Print Spooler crashes, RDP service outages — and whether client onboarding automation is built to reduce the manual steps currently required for each new deployment.

We also review script execution logs: whether existing automation is running successfully, whether output is being logged to device records, and whether any scheduled scripts are failing silently without anyone noticing.

Backup Monitoring Coverage

Backup failures are the most common source of after-the-fact client disasters in managed services, and they are almost always preventable. The failure did not happen overnight — it happened gradually, across multiple failed jobs, while nobody was watching closely enough.

TechPIO reviews whether backup health monitoring is integrated into your RMM environment or managed through a separate backup portal that requires manual daily checks. We verify that backup failure alerts are configured to fire within 24 hours of a missed job, that backup health data is visible per endpoint within your RMM dashboard, and that backup compliance reporting is being delivered to clients.

Endpoint Coverage Gaps

Endpoint coverage gaps — devices in your managed environments that are either not monitored, monitored with the wrong policy, or enrolled to an incorrect organizational group — are the most common finding in TechPIO audits and the one most likely to surprise MSP owners who believe their environments are fully covered.

We identify every device operating without an active agent, every device assigned to a default or generic policy that does not match its actual role, and every organizational group with incorrect policy inheritance that may be causing monitoring gaps across entire client environments.

Coverage gaps in domain controllers, backup servers, and network infrastructure create the highest operational risk — these are the devices where a missed alert is most likely to become a client-visible incident.

Covers ConnectWise Automate, Datto RMM, NinjaOne, SyncroMSP, and Kaseya VSA

COMPREHENSIVE MSP SOLUTIONS

Platforms TechPIO Audits

ConnectWise Automate Audit

ConnectWise Automate is the most configurationally complex RMM platform in the MSP market — which makes it both the most powerful and the most commonly misconfigured. The depth of CWA's automation engine means there are more ways to configure it incorrectly than any other platform, and more improvement opportunity waiting for MSPs whose environments have grown without structured attention.

TechPIO's ConnectWise Automate audit reviews the complete platform architecture: Monitor configuration and alert routing, Script library utilization and Agent Procedure structure, Patch Manager policy design and approval workflow, Extra Data Fields (EDF) population and utilization, Group and Class structure for policy inheritance, PSA integration ticket routing, and Plugin health and compatibility.

We review CWA-specific configuration patterns — including SQL-based monitor conditions, dataview configurations, and role-based access — and identify where the platform's native capability is being underused or where configuration decisions made at initial deployment are creating ongoing operational drag.

After completing your ConnectWise Automate audit, TechPIO can implement the findings through our ConnectWise Automate consulting service.

Datto RMM Audit

Datto RMM's cloud-native architecture and ComStore component library make it accessible to deploy — which also means many Datto environments are deployed quickly and never revisited. The platform's flexibility means that a Datto RMM environment configured by a technician during a busy onboarding period looks very different from one built with a structured operational framework.

TechPIO's Datto RMM audit reviews: Alert rule configuration and threshold settings, Policy assignment structure across client organizations, Component library utilization and custom component deployment, Patch management zone configuration and approval logic, Scripting capability utilization, Backup job monitoring integration, and PSA integration ticket routing and priority mapping.

We pay particular attention to the ComStore policy templates that many Datto environments still run at default settings — a pattern that consistently generates alert noise and creates the false impression that the platform is underperforming when the real issue is configuration.

Our Datto RMM consulting team is available to implement the audit findings if you choose to proceed.

NinjaOne Audit

NinjaOne's clean interface and rapid deployment capability make it one of the fastest-growing RMM platforms in the MSP market. The ease of getting NinjaOne running also means many environments were built device-by-device rather than with a policy-first architecture — a structural decision that creates significant configuration debt as the environment scales.

TechPIO's NinjaOne audit reviews: Organization structure and device role assignments, Policy template library and inheritance configuration, Condition-based monitoring and threshold settings, Automation script deployment and execution logs, Patch management policy design including third-party application coverage, PSA integration configuration, and Custom condition and alert routing logic.

We specifically assess whether NinjaOne's policy inheritance model is being used correctly — the single most common architectural gap in NinjaOne environments that were built without a structured template framework from day one.

NinjaOne consulting from TechPIO is available for environments where significant rebuilding is recommended following the audit.

SyncroMSP Audit

SyncroMSP's all-in-one RMM and PSA model eliminates the integration gap that creates friction in environments running separate platforms — but it also means that the PSA side and the RMM side of the Syncro environment are frequently configured with different levels of attention, creating internal inconsistencies that affect both monitoring quality and billing accuracy.

TechPIO's SyncroMSP audit reviews: Automation policy structure and rule logic, Monitoring check configuration and threshold settings, RMM-to-PSA workflow integration within the platform, Script library deployment and scheduling, Patch management configuration and compliance tracking, and Billing rule alignment with monitoring and time entry data.

We assess whether Syncro's combined model is being used to its full operational advantage or whether the environment has grown in ways that create the same ticket noise and double-handling that separate RMM-PSA integrations typically produce.

SyncroMSP consulting is available for environments requiring structured optimization after the audit.

Kaseya VSA Audit

Kaseya VSA's enterprise-grade capabilities make it well-suited for larger MSP environments — and its depth means that environments running VSA at scale almost always have configuration areas that have not received structured attention since initial deployment.

TechPIO's Kaseya VSA audit reviews: Agent procedure structure and automation utilization, Monitor set configuration and alert routing, Policy management and inheritance logic, Patch management schedule configuration and compliance, Automation Exchange component utilization, and PSA integration ticket routing.

We assess whether VSA's enterprise capabilities are being used proportionally to the environment's scale — the most common finding in Kaseya environments is that the automation capability available far exceeds what is actually deployed, with technicians handling tasks manually that the platform could handle automatically.

Our Kaseya RMM consulting team implements audit findings for environments requiring comprehensive optimization.

RMM AUTOMATION TOOLS

The RMM Audit Process — What Happens Step by Step

Production-ready plugins and scripts to automate your RMM operations, reduce manual tasks, and improve monitoring efficiency

Step 1 —

Discovery Call (30 Minutes)

The process begins with a 30-minute discovery call with a TechPIO RMM specialist. This call has a specific structure: we ask five questions about your current environment — which platform you are running, how many clients and endpoints you manage, what your primary operational pain points are, what monitoring and automation you believe is currently in place, and what prompted you to look for an external assessment.

You do not need to prepare anything for this call. We are gathering context that allows us to focus the audit on the areas most likely to surface meaningful findings for your specific environment. The call also gives both sides an opportunity to confirm that an audit is the right next step before any access is provided.

At the end of the discovery call, TechPIO will confirm the audit scope, provide a secure credential request, and give you a specific date when the report will be delivered.

Step 2 —

RMM Environment Access and Review

TechPIO requires read-only access to your RMM environment to conduct the audit. We do not require administrative credentials — read-level access to the monitoring configuration, policy structure, patch management settings, script library, and PSA integration settings is sufficient for a comprehensive review.

All credentials are shared via a one-time secret link — never by email. Access is provisioned for the audit period only and revoked immediately upon audit completion. TechPIO does not retain access to any client RMM environment beyond the engagement scope.

Once access is confirmed, TechPIO's audit team reviews the environment against our 47-point assessment framework. We document every finding, classify it by severity (critical gap, significant improvement opportunity, or minor optimization), and assess the estimated operational impact of each remediation.

For larger environments — MSPs managing 50+ clients or 2,000+ endpoints — the review may extend to three business days to ensure comprehensive coverage. All findings are documented before the report is compiled.

Step 3 —

Report Delivery Within 5 Business Days

The RMM health check report is delivered as a PDF document within 5 business days of the initial discovery call. The report is structured to be immediately actionable — not a list of observations, but a prioritized remediation plan with specific recommendations.

Each finding is classified by impact level (High / Medium / Low) and effort required (Quick fix / Structured project), giving your team a clear sequence for implementation. High-impact, low-effort items are presented first — the changes that will produce the most visible operational improvement the fastest.

The report includes before-state documentation, specific recommended configurations, platform-specific implementation notes for your RMM environment, and estimated operational outcomes for each recommendation.

The report is provided in TechPIO format and is not branded for your clients — it is an internal operational document for your MSP team.

Step 4 —

Implementation Support (Optional)

The RMM health check report is designed to be actionable by your internal team without further TechPIO involvement. Every recommendation includes enough specificity that a competent RMM administrator can implement it directly.

If your team wants TechPIO to implement the findings — rebuilding monitoring policies, developing automation scripts, reconfiguring patch management, or restructuring your PSA integration — that engagement is quoted separately based on the scope of the report findings.

Many MSPs use the health check as the starting point for an ongoing RMM consulting relationship. Others use the report to guide their internal team's work over the following quarter. Either approach is valid. There is no pressure to proceed to a paid engagement after the free audit.

RMM Audit Comman Issues

What TechPIO Commonly Finds in RMM Audits

After auditing over 199 MSP environments across ConnectWise Automate, Datto RMM, NinjaOne, and SyncroMSP, TechPIO has observed consistent patterns in what is missing, misconfigured, or underused. These are the findings that appear in the majority of audits.

Sound familiar? If you recognized your environment in more than three of these findings, a TechPIO RMM health check will surface the complete picture — not just the patterns, but the specific configurations in your environment that are causing them.

RMM Health Check — Platform-Specific Findings

Common ConnectWise Automate Issues Found

ConnectWise Automate environments share a consistent set of configuration patterns that TechPIO encounters across virtually every CWA audit:

Default Alert Templates never updated from installation

CWA ships with generic alert thresholds that are appropriate for initial testing and inappropriate for production MSP operations. Most environments still run these defaults years after deployment.

Patch Manager not configured for staged rollout

Patches deploying to all endpoints simultaneously with no pilot group or testing ring creates unnecessary deployment risk.

Script library limited to out-of-box TechPIO scripts

The CWA built-in script library is a starting point, not a complete automation library. Most environments have added nothing beyond what came pre-installed.

Extra Data Fields (EDFs) unpopulated

EDFs are one of CWA's most powerful features for surfacing custom data from managed endpoints. The majority of environments have EDFs defined but not populated by any scheduled scripts.

Group structure designed for navigation convenience, not policy inheritance

Group hierarchies built for how technicians browse the platform create policy inheritance problems that cause monitoring gaps across entire client environments.

PSA integration creating tickets from every alert regardless of severity

The most common CWA-to-ConnectWise Manage integration configuration issue, generating ticket backlogs that undermine SLA reporting accuracy.

CWA server version behind current release

Server updates are frequently deprioritized against client-facing work, creating compatibility issues with newer plugin versions and security exposure.
