Seamless Migration to the New Windows App — Fully Automated for All Users.
Microsoft has announced the deprecation of the legacy Windows Remote Desktop Client on March 27, 2026. Many organizations still rely on this client to access their Azure and remote environments, which means this change can directly impact productivity if not handled proactively.
To eliminate disruption and last-minute firefighting, we’ve built a complete, end-to-end migration solution designed specifically for MSPs and IT teams.
This solution doesn’t just install the new Windows App — it also removes the legacy Remote Desktop client automatically, ensuring a clean, standardized environment acstandardisedross all endpoints.
What We’ve Built: A Full Migration Framework
We’ve developed two complementary automation scripts that together deliver a smooth, hands-off transition:
Script 1: Install the New Windows App (For Every User)
Our primary deployment script automatically downloads and installs the new Windows App on target machines.
Key highlights:
- Installs for all users on the device — not just the currently logged-in user
- Works even when machines are locked or no user is logged in
- Designed to run silently via RMM, with no user interruption
- Ensures devices are pre-ready before users sign in
- Enables faster access to remote environments right from first login
This dramatically reduces downtime by making sure endpoints are already prepared before users need them.
Script 2: Legacy Microsoft Remote Desktop Client Removal
To complete the transition, we’ve also created a second script that detects and removes the legacy Microsoft Remote Desktop Client.
Why this matters:
- Prevents user confusion caused by having both old and new clients installed
- Eliminates accidental launches of the deprecated app
- Helps standardize environments across fleets
- Reduces support tickets related to “which app should I use?”
- Ensures full compliance ahead of Microsoft’s deprecation deadline
Together, these two scripts provide a true migration path: install the modern Windows App and cleanly retire the legacy client.
Benefits
By combining installation and removal into one automated workflow, this solution delivers:
- Reduced downtime through proactive preparation
- Faster onboarding and remote access readiness
- Consistent user experience across all devices
- Lower support overhead
- Cleaner, standardized endpoints
- Confidence that environments are ready well before March 27, 2026
In short: machines are ready before users log in, and legacy software is removed before it becomes a problem.
Ready for Deployment
Both scripts are now production-ready and can be deployed immediately across affected environments.
